Mountain and wild pony mountain hike

A scenic 50 minute drive from the rental cabin is a hiking experience like no other.

Grayson Highlands State Park has drive-up look out points and a little store/museum, but the real gem is the Rhododendron Trail, where wild ponies roam. It’s a great family destination, with an uphill (then downhill) hike of a mile or so each way- very doable with energetic kids.

You can spend as little as an hour or two doing the pony hike, or you could pack a lunch and spend an entire day at this park.

To get to the Rhododendron Trail, follow the road in until you find the Massie Gap Parking area. You’ll see a hill with a defined trail. At the beginning of the trail, you’ll see the Rhododentron Trail sign. Just follow the path from there!

A fun family hiking destination in the mountains, close to a luxury mountain rental cabin.

The hike has beautiful views...

Don't forget hiking supplies:

Comfortable walking shoes

Water

Phone or camera (you’ll want to capture this experience!)

If you are bringing a stroller, an umbrella stroller won’t do- bring a sturdy running-type stroller (as seen in the photo above, there are some points where tree roots line the path)
